Jill Elizabeth Pitkeathley, Baroness Pitkeathley OBE (* 4. January 1940 on the Channel Island of Guernsey ) is a British writer and politician of the Labor Party .

Life

Pitkeathley was born an only child on the Channel Island of Guernsey. She spent her early childhood in Yorkshire, evacuated to England due to the war and the occupation of the Channel Islands by the German Empire . She attended Ladies 'College, a private girls' school in St. Peter Port on the Channel Island of Guernsey. She graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in sociology .

Pitkeathley began her professional career in the social field. She was a social worker in Manchester , Berkshire and Essex from 1961 to 1967 .

From 1970 to 1982, she was the National Health Service's coordinator for volunteer and volunteer workers. From 1983 to 1986 she worked for the National Consumer Council. She was then from 1986 to 1998 managing director ( chief executive ) of charities and charity Carers UK (formerly National Council for Carers). She built what was then a relatively small organization into an organization with national significance. In particular, she campaigned for better public awareness of professional and voluntary nursing staff. She has written books and guides on elderly care and family care, including It's My Duty Isn't It? (1989) and Only Child: How to Survive Being One (1994). These publications brought her national fame.

From 1998 to 2004 she was Chair of the New Opportunities Fund (NOF), a public, non-governmental organization that distributes money from the revenues of national lottery operators to projects in the fields of education , health and the environment .

In 2004 she became Chair of the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS). She held this office until 2008; her successor in office is Claire Tyler, Baroness Tyler of Enfield .

From 2005 to 2008 she was also Chair of the Future Builders Advisory Panel. In 2008 she was interim president of the General Social Care Council. Pitkeathley has also been Chair of the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) since 2009 . Pitkeathley also served as Chair of the Office for Civil Society Advisory Body until it was abolished in March 2011.

In the area of local government and local politics to Pitkeathley also committed. She was Vice President of the Berkshire Community Council from 1990 to 1998 ; since 1998 she has been its president.

Pitkeathley was also a founding member of ACEVO, the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organizations.

Pitkeathley has also become known as a writer in recent years. She is the author of two historical novels about the life of Jane Austen : Cassandra and Jane (2008) and Dearest Cousin (2010). The books are published by HarperCollins .

Membership in the House of Lords

On October 6, 1997, she was raised to Life Peeress as Baroness Pitkeathley , of Caversham in the Royal County of Berkshire . She sits in the House of Lords for the Labor Party.

On November 20, 1997, she gave her inaugural address.

In the House of Lords she has been Deputy President of Parliament ( Deputy Speaker ) since 2002 and also Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committees ( Deputy Chair of Committees ) since 2002 .

Pitkeathley's political interests include health , social and welfare work, charities, and volunteering . She is particularly interested in the Channel Islands .

Honors

Pitkeathley was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire .

She has several honorary doctorates . She holds honorary doctorates from the University of Bristol and the London Metropolitan University .

In 2006 she received the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award at the Charity Awards in recognition of her services to the social field.

Private

Pitkeathley was first married to a fellow student she had met at the University of Bristol. The marriage resulted in two children, a son (Robert) and a daughter (Rachel). The marriage later divorced; Pitkeathley then returned to full-time employment.

She currently lives (as of November 2012) alternately in London and Herefordshire . She is married to the author David Emerson for the second time; together with him she wrote the books Only Child and Age Gap Relationships .

Pitkeathley's hobbies include walking, drama , engaging with her grandchildren and gardening . She and her second husband devote themselves to growing wildflowers on a hill in the Wye Valley .
