Jim Harrison
James Thomas "Jim" Harrison (born December 11, 1937 in Grayling , Michigan , † March 26, 2016 in Patagonia , Arizona ) was an American writer .
Life
Jim Harrison grew up on a farm in Reed City , Michigan. His father, who worked for the Michigan Department of Agriculture, and his sister died in a car accident in 1958. He attended high school in Haslett , Michigan. As a teenager he worked in Colorado and hitchhiked back for the first time in the landscape of the Sandhills . Harrison married Linda King in 1959; they had two daughters. He lived alternately in Patagonia, Arizona and Livingston , Montana .
Harrison studied literature at Michigan State University and graduated with a master's degree in 1964 . He worked for a short time as an assistant at the State University of New York and made his way as a freelance writer from 1966, initially in very modest circumstances. He wrote poetry and in 1971 published Wolf: A False Memoir, his first novel. In his early days he received scholarships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and in 1969 a Guggenheim Fellowship . He received the Spirit of the West Award from the Mountain & Plains Booksellers Association and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2007.
Harrison has published short stories and essays in leading American magazines and has published a variety of novels, collections of short stories and poetry. Two novels were made into a film: Revenge (1990) and Legends of the Fall (1994). He wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of Wolf with Wesley Strick in 1994 , for which they received the Saturn Award . In 2015 Harrison was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
