Jirina Prekop , actually Jiřina Prekopová (born October 14, 1929 in Prostějov ; † September 7, 2020 in Prague ), was a Czechoslovak or Czech psychologist .

Life

Jirina Prekop left Czechoslovakia in 1970 after studying psychology , philosophy and education and settled in the Federal Republic of Germany . She worked as a psychologist in the Olgahospital in Stuttgart . In 1981 she took over the principles of restraint therapy for the alleged cure of autism from the American psychologist Martha Welch and developed them using the “systemic approach” of the also controversial Bert Hellinger, continue to “Prekop Holding Therapy”. In addition, she published several educational guides and supported the family-political Christian - conservative interest group Familiennetzwerk , which is primarily committed to childcare outside the family. Jirina Prekop lived temporarily in Lindau and most recently in Prague.

criticism

Critics consider Prekop's therapeutic approach to be pseudoscientific. Therapy is based on the assumption that autism is caused by a disturbed mother-child relationship ; this approach is part of a tradition of explanation that was established by Bruno Bettelheim and Nikolaas Tinbergen . Many parents of autistic children felt guilty about the development of the children and their guilt feelings were confirmed by psychologists who saw the cause of autism in the parenting errors of " refrigerator mothers ". A form of therapy that promised healing with the active participation of the mothers led some mothers to hope to make amends for the alleged wrongdoing. The fact that the autistic children defended themselves massively was accepted. The aim of the procedure is to break the will of the autistic child. For a long time, a genetic disposition has been seen as the main cause of autism , so that the depth psychological approach is considered incorrect in the professional world.

Children who were subjected to this therapy showed symptoms of the so-called Stockholm syndrome rather than real therapeutic success. Ultimately, violence is practically exercised on the children, sometimes by holding the children for hours. Autistic people who have undergone this type of therapy report experiences of trauma.
