Jirō Tsuji
Jirō Tsuji ( Japanese 辻 二郎 , Tsuji Jirō ; born May 11, 1927 in Shiga ) is a Japanese chemist .
Life
Tsuji earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kyoto University in 1951 and then worked for a pharmaceutical company for several years. As a Fulbright Fellow , he went to the United States for doctoral studies . In 1960 he received a Ph.D. at Columbia University . In his of Gilbert Stork supervised dissertation he focused on synthesis of natural products , including the total synthesis of vitamin D . After returning to Japan, he worked in basic research at Toray Industries Inc. from 1962 . From 1974 to 1988 he was professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology , from 1988 to 1996 at the Okayama University of Science and from 1996 at the Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts . In 1999 he retired .
Tsuji works in the field of organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis . He develops new synthetic reactions that are catalyzed by complexes of transition metals , in particular palladium complexes . He uses these reactions in the total synthesis of natural products . The Tsuji-Trost reaction , a palladium-catalyzed alkylation of allyl compounds , is named after him and Barry Trost .
He married in 1952 and has three children.
