Joachim Hirsch (born April 22, 1938 in Schwenningen am Neckar ) is a German political scientist and emeritus professor of political science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

From 1957 to 1961, Hirsch studied economics , political science and sociology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. In 1965 he received his doctorate in political science with a thesis on the public functions of the trade unions . From 1970 to 1972 he was a deputy professor for political science at the universities of Konstanz and Göttingen . From 1972 to 2003 he was Professor of Political Science at the University of Frankfurt am Main. Hirsch is a board member of medico international and the medico international foundation as well as a member of the editorial team of links-netz.de.

Hirsch dealt intensively with Antonio Gramsci 's theory of hegemony , with Nicos Poulantzas ' theory of the state, and with French regulation theory . In the 1970s, Hirsch was instrumental in the debate on the derivation of the state , which explored the limits of social change through state reform policies. Hirsch criticized the idea, which in his opinion was rooted in social democracy as well as in Leninism , “that an emancipatory change in society could be brought about by means of state reform policies.” He was also critical of the success of the Greens , which brought about “a new boom in the reformist state illusion” the materialist critique of the state sidelined presented.

Internationalization of the state

In the debate about the role of the state in globalization , Hirsch takes the position that the importance of the national state does not decrease. This is changing in its structure: Some parts of the state (such as the Ministry of Finance) have an advantage over others (Ministry of Social Affairs). This in turn affects the relationship between state and society at the expense of the interests of the exploited and oppressed. The governments are not to be understood as victims of economic globalization. They pushed this process forward with their policy of deregulation, albeit without being able to fully control its consequences (interiorization).
