Joachim Zoepf (* 1955 in Düsseldorf ) is a German woodwind player in the field of new improvised music , who was initially also active in the jazz field . In addition to the soprano , tenor and baritone saxophone, the bass clarinet is one of his instruments.

Live and act

Zoepf, whose father was a musical amateur, began learning the piano in 1964 . From 1976 he played the saxophone . He began studying music in 1979 at the Vienna Conservatory with Karel Krautgartner and later continued it at the Cologne University of Music in the field of jazz. Since 1983 he has been working as a freelance musician and music teacher. He took part in a wide variety of formations, be it in the field of "enlightened jazz" (including the Cologne Saxophone Mafia , Lunx) or new music (including collaboration with Paulo C. Chagas ).

Zoepf's current focus is on " Improvised New Music ", which he plays in preferably continuously rehearsing formations. He is particularly interested in cross-genre collaboration with the performing or visual arts . He is also responsible for numerous productions and publications. He / she works u. a. with Mark Charig , Hans Schneider , Wolfgang Schliemann, Ulrich Phillip, Günter Christmann , Frank Rühl, Melvyn Poore , Gunda Gottschalk , Martin Theurer , Johannes S. Sistermanns or Rilo Chmielorz.

In addition, Zoepf worked with the “Initiative Kölner Jazzhaus” and the “Initiativkreis Freie Musik” in Cologne and is co-founder of the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Improvisierte Musik” with Paul Hubweber . In 1999 he initiated the label "Improvisers Series" as a sub-label of Nur / Not / Nur. He was also a co-organizer of the "Leitkultur" series, a series of events for freely improvised music. So far he has presented five solo albums, can be heard on several group productions and was involved in four albums with the Cologne Saxophone Mafia.
