Lothar Quinkenstein

Lothar Quinkenstein (born September 11, 1967 in Bayreuth ) is a Berlin-based German literary scholar , writer , poet and translator from Polish .

life and work

Lothar Quinkenstein spent childhood and youth in Saarland . After graduating from the Illtal-Gymnasium Illingen , he studied German and ethnology in Freiburg im Breisgau , in 1993 he worked as a German teacher in St. Petersburg, and in 1994 he took up a position as a German teacher in a high school in Mielec, southeast Poland . After completing his doctorate at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Posen (Poznań) with Stefan Kaszyński, he took up a position at the Institute for German Philology there in 1999. Since 2012 he has been teaching within the framework of "Intercultural German Studies", which was set up as a joint course of study at the European University Viadrina (Frankfurt / Oder) and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Quinkenstein writes poetry and prose, literary articles, book reviews, studies. He made his debut in 1998 with the volume of short stories Nervenharfe .

Lothar Quinkenstein lived in Poland from 1994 to 2011, and has lived in Berlin since 2011.

In his texts, Quinkenstein deals primarily with German-Polish topics, with perspectives on the perception of Poland and Central Europe, with the west-east asymmetries of memory with regard to the "most fragile part of the West" (Milan Kundera) and with questions of memory German-Polish-Jewish context. His poetological concept revolves around the image of the "opposite site": in the language of mining, a second tunnel access that is driven from the "opposite side" to the seam. The development of the memorial "counterparts" shows what has been excluded from the western dominated narratives. "But who wrote the pinball song?" - it says in the poem "black box eighty-nine". The answer to this question opens the broad horizon of the destroyed and (repeatedly) forgotten worlds that can no longer be found on today's maps.
