Joanne Chory (born March 19, 1955 in Methuen , Massachusetts , United States ) is an American plant biologist at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla , California , and the University of California, San Diego .

Chory acquired at Oberlin College ( Ohio ) a Bachelor in Biology and Samuel Kaplan at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign a Ph.D. in biochemistry . As a postdoctoral fellow , she worked from 1984 with Fred Ausubel (* 1945) and Gerald R. Fink at the Harvard Medical School .

In 1988, Chory started his own research group at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla , California ( Assistant Professor , 1994 Associate Professor ). Since 1992 she has also been an adjunct professor at the University of California, San Diego . Since 1997 she has also been doing research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

Since 1998 she has held a full professorship for plant biology at the Salk Institute and heads the local institute for plant biology.

Chory was able to do groundbreaking work on the genetics and molecular biology of photomorphogenesis and its influence by photoreceptors and their signal transduction . In her research group, brassinolide , a plant steroid hormone that mediates the response of plants to light, was discovered, and the associated hormone receptor and its signaling pathway were identified. Chory made a major contribution to our understanding of auxins , another group of plant hormones. Much of her work uses the thale cress ( Arabidopsis thaliana ) as a model organism .
