Ottilie von Arnim

Jobst von Dewitz (no. 129 of the Gender counting ), among others, in Bologna had studied law, already arrived at a young age to the court of the Pomeranian Dukes, where already his father advice from Bogislaw X had been. Jobst had met Martin Luther personally in Wittenberg in 1524 and since then has endeavored to enforce the Reformation in Pomerania. When there was unrest in Stolp in 1525 after Johannes Amandus appeared, he was able to prevent the Reformation movement from being banned as an advisor to Duke George I.

In 1529 he accompanied Georg I to the Reichstag in Speyer , where the imperial estate of Pomerania and the succession of Brandenburg were confirmed in the event that the griffin dukes died out. In 1532 he held the office of castle captain of Wolgast and supported the young Duke Philip I of Pommern-Wolgast in dividing Pomerania's inheritance. Together with the Szczecin Chancellor Bartholomäus Swawe , he played a key role in convening the Treptow Landtag to Rega in 1534. The aim of the state parliament was to enforce the decision of Pomerania for Protestantism. In addition to religious conflicts, the future of ecclesiastical possessions was the most important question. The ducal councils discussed the influence of the dukes on the property and the organization of the church.

After the introduction of the Reformation in Pomerania was decided despite the opposition of the diocese of Cammin and the landed aristocracy, Jobst von Dewitz accompanied the reformer Johannes Bugenhagen in 1535 on the visitations of the individual churches to ensure the practical implementation of the Reformation. The secularization of the monasteries aroused the opposition of King Ferdinand I and the Imperial Court of Justice also called for the complete reversal of the Reformation in Pomerania on behalf of Emperor Charles V. In order to protect itself against the threat of imperial intervention, Pomerania joined the Schmalkaldic League . The negotiations on this were conducted in August 1535 with the Electorate of Saxony by Dewitz, Swawe and Bugenhagen. In order to strengthen the alliance, Philip I's marriage to Maria of Saxony was agreed at the same time.

In 1538 Dewitz had a castle built in Daber that was similar to the south wing of the Szczecin Palace. He transferred this, other properties and valuables to his wife on July 29, 1538. In 1539, Dewitz was instrumental in reopening the University of Greifswald alongside Bugenhagen . After his death on February 20, 1542, Jobst von Dewitz was buried in the princely crypt in Wolgast.
