Josef Wilhelm "Papa Joe" Buschmann (born April 6, 1925 in Wattenscheid ; † October 13, 2015 ) was a German jazz musician and restaurateur. He ran several music bars in Cologne.

Live and act

Buschmann, who grew up in Cologne, founded a salon orchestra at the age of 15 , which he ran on the side until he graduated from high school. After the end of the war he studied in Münster and also performed almost every day as a pianist in British officers' casinos . He was only able to realize the idea of combining music with gastronomy after the opening of a small hotel in Cologne in 1956, in whose beer bar Buschmann himself acted as a bar pianist . In 1964, Buschmann founded the "Orchestrion", the first discotheque in Cologne, on Rudolfplatz in the basement of the Hahnentorburg . During the breaks of the disc jockeys , including Frank Elstner , Ray Miller and Jack White , he tried to entertain the guests with an orchestrion from 1903 located there.

In 1974, in the revitalized old town of Cologne , Buschmann founded Papa Joe's jazz bar and a little later Papa Joe's beer salon Klimperkasten . A jazz band has been performing in Papa Joe's jazz bar since 1974, alternating daily - usually in swing or Dixieland style; meanwhile there is also soul , funk and latin jazz . In the Klimperkasten , where historical mechanical musical instruments collected by Buschmann can be heard, the landlord also performed as a pianist from time to time. In his last years Buschmann continued to accompany the vocal trio Die Schmonzetten , for which he also arranged. He also arranged a cabaret Otto Reutter evening, which was performed repeatedly in Cologne and the surrounding area.
