Joseph Alan "Joe" Garner (born April 12, 1988 in Blackburn ) is an English football player who has been under contract with Wigan Athletic since 2018 .

Athletic career

Joe Garner started his professional career in his hometown of Blackburn with the Blackburn Rovers , for whom he had already played in his youth. In the team of coach Mark Hughes , however, Garner found it difficult to prevail against such well-known competitors as Benni McCarthy , Shabani Nonda and Jason Roberts .

Garner therefore moved in January 2007, initially on loan to Carlisle United in the third highest English division, Football League One , and scored five goals in 18 games. After the end of the season he joined the "Cumbrians" in August 2007 for a club-internal record transfer fee of 140,000 pounds on a firm basis. The year 2007/08 started very successfully for him and he scored 14 goals in 31 league games. In February 2008 he tore a cruciate ligament against Derby County , causing him to be out for the remainder of the season. His teammates, meanwhile, finished the season in fourth place and failed in the semi-finals of the promotion play-offs at Leeds United .

Joe Garner denied the 2008/09 season, but in the second highest English league after in July 2008, the second division promoted Nottingham Forest paid the uncommitted transfer fee of £ 1,140,000. He signed a contract until 2012, played 28 league games in the first season and scored seven goals. Nottingham only secured relegation on the penultimate matchday. During the break of the season, Nottingham signed three new strikers with Dexter Blackstock , Dele Adebola and David McGoldrick , so that Garner started the season in the unfamiliar position in right midfield, a place he lost in November and was then rarely used. He only scored his two goals of the season at the end of the season, when he was twice on the starting line-up as a striker. In the subsequent semifinals of the promotion play-offs against FC Blackpool , he was not used.

In July 2010, Garner signed a six-month loan deal with third division club Huddersfield Town . After the loan contract expired, he moved to Scunthorpe United on January 31, 2011 until the end of the season .

On August 31, 2011, he moved to second division rivals Watford FC and signed a two-year contract. After a brief stint in Carlisle , Garner was then under contract from 2013 to 2016 with the third division Preston North End . In August 2016 he moved to the Glasgow Rangers in Scotland. After a season with the Rangers, he moved to Ipswich Town .
