Joe Hanchrow

Joseph "Joe" G. Hanchrow (also Chicken Joe Hanchrow , born May 24, 1935 in New City (New York) ; † October 1, 2017 ) was an American jazz musician ( tuba , double bass , bass guitar ).

Hanchrow attended the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore; During the performance of his military service 1958-62 he played in a naval band. In New York City he worked in the following years as a salesman and as a freelance musician; He was also a long-time member of the Smith Street Society Jazz Band around Herb Gardner and Bruce McNichols , which has existed since the early 1960s. With the Dixieland formation he also appeared at the Manassas Jazz Festival in 1980 ; he can be heard on albums such as The Smith Street Society Jazz Band Plays Jelly Roll Morton (1980) and I'm Alabamy Bound (1983, with Howard Alden , among others ). He also played u. a. with The Manhattan Brass Choir featuring Clark Terry and Urbie Green ( Praise to the Living God ), with Keith Ingham / Marty Grosz ( Just Imagine ... Songs of DeSylva, Brown & Henderson , 1994), with John Gill 's Jazz Kings ( I Must Have It!, 2004, among others with Jon-Erik Kellso ) and in the 2010s as bassist with Don Keiling & the Lost Chord. The discographer Tom Lord lists his participation in eleven recording sessions between 1967 and 2004
