Joel Locher

Joel Locher (born July 28, 1982 in Stuttgart ) is a Swiss-German jazz musician ( double bass ).

Locher comes from a family of musicians; his mother is an opera singer, his father is a classical double bass player. He took piano and cello lessons at the age of five and trumpet lessons at the age of twelve. In 1994 he received his first double bass lessons from his father. He began to be interested in jazz at the age of ten, but continued to pursue a classical career. Various prizes at Jugend Musiziert followed . He studied classical double bass with Ulrich Lau at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts . From 1998 to 2001 Joel Locher was solo double bass player in the Stuttgart Youth Chamber Orchestra and in 2001 and 2002 a member of the festival orchestra of the Stuttgart International Bach Academy . From 2004–2005 he was an intern with the Stuttgart Philharmonic .

Already during his studies he became increasingly concerned with jazz and first became a member of the group of Wawau Adler , with whom he toured several times and has recorded several albums since 2006. He was also part of Olivia Trummer's trio . He has been a member of the Gismo Graf Trio since 2010 . He also plays in Frank Kuruc's quartet and Robert Giegling's quintet . He has toured several times with Funka Nova around Pee Wee Ellis and Peter Fessler . He can also be heard on productions by Pur , Gee Hye Lee , Sandro Roy , Frank Heinz and Portosol.
