Johan Christoffer Boklund (born May 17, 1817 in Kulla Gunnarstorp, Skåne , † December 9, 1880 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish painter and representative of the Munich School .

Life

Boklund came to Lund at the age of 15 , where he worked on the design of panels for works by the naturalist Sven Nilsson . He enrolled at the Art Academy in Copenhagen , where he was a student of Johann Ludwig Lund (1777–1867). In 1837 Boklund moved to Stockholm and attended the Royal Swedish Art Academy . From 1846, Boklund spent eight years in Munich together with his artist colleague Johan Fredrik Höckert (1826–1866) . The painting Den nyfikne trumpetaren (The Inquisitive Trumpeter), which he had sent to Sweden in 1853, earned him an impressive scholarship, which enabled him to travel to Paris . There he worked from 1854 to December 1855 in Thomas Couture's atelier before returning to Sweden.

Boklund received a teaching position at the Stockholm Art Academy and was appointed professor in 1856. On his initiative the Stockholm Artists Club (Konstnärsklubben) was formed in the same year. At the same time he was an art teacher for Charles XV until 1872 . From 1861 Boklund belonged to a commission for the establishment of the new national museum and at the same time he was employed as administrator of the former royal museum. His other duties included the management of the art department of the National Museum (from 1866), the organization of the Nordic Art Exhibition of 1866, the administration of the painting collection of Charles XV. and the management of the art academy (from 1867). Due to the many administrative tasks, Boklund had little time for his own artistic work at the end of his life and his health also suffered as a result.
