Johann Ackerl, son of a bricklayer, entered the novitiate of St. Florian in 1870 and began studying theology there. In 1874 he made his profession and was ordained a priest the following year . In 1877 he went to Innsbruck to continue his studies , in 1883 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. In 1887 he became a professor of pastoral theology , homiletics and catechetics at the theological home school of Sankt Florian.

From 1882 to 1887 he was a cooperator in Wallern an der Trattnach . In 1885 he made a pilgrimage to Lourdes . On his return he arranged for a Lourdes grotto to be built in Wallern. The criticism of the Lutheran superintendent Jakob Ernst Koch of this company sparked years of journalistic controversy. Ackerl's book Our Lady of Lourdes or Who Is Right was sold almost a million times in eleven editions. His anti- liberal work Der Amtmann von Rüdipum , published in 1890, was confiscated by the Linz public prosecutor in 1891. It appeared in the same year in a milder form under the title Catholic or liberal?

In 1905 Ackerl was elected to the monastery dean of St. Florian. In 1909 he became consistorial councilor . He resigned from both offices in 1911. He then headed the St. Florian monastery in Linz .
