Johann Adolf Engels (* August 20, 1767 in Kettwig ; † October 16, 1828 in Werden ) (deviating: * August 20, 1764; † July 14, 1828 ) was a German paper manufacturer.

Life

Johann Adolf Engels was the son of Hermann Wilhelm Engels (1734–1776), cloth merchant and founder of the coal trading company “St. Ludger und Companie ”, whereby the Ruhr shipping could be opened. His mother was Cäcilia Margaretha (1742–1805), a daughter of the businessman Heinrich Speck from Urdenbach near Düsseldorf .

He attended the community school in Kettwig and then continued his self- education . He received a business education at the company Böninger in Duisburg and later founded that with in common with his three brothers, a write trading business Delstern nearby paper mill was associated that he leased from 1795 to 1798.

Furthermore, since 1797 he operated the Nümbrechtsmühle in Nümbrecht in the former imperial rule of Homburg and in 1799 leased the Holsterhausen paper mill near the town from the Werden Abbey . In addition to writing paper, he initially produced green concept or printing paper, the color of which had already been added to the pulp or rags. Then he tried to make waterproof and fireproof paper. As the first German papermaker, he made rust-proof wrapping paper (a forerunner of plastic film), which used to come from England and Holland, from old ship ropes and received a patent from the grand ducal Bergisches Land for it. The continental barrier raised sales. In 1810 he decided to set up his Holsterhausen plant entirely for the production of rust-protecting wrapping paper, which was mainly purchased by the Solingen steel manufacturers. For this he was awarded the commemorative coin at the exhibition of commercial products in Berlin in 1822 . He also invented a type of paper that was very suitable for copperplate engravings ; for this purpose he published the work "The trip to Werden, Duisburg and Essen", in which some copper engravings were printed on his paper.

Together with Karl Teschemacher, he leased the paper mill in Sodingen and the Strünkeder paper mill in 1810 .

In 1817 Johann Wülfing from Scheidlingsmühle near Düsseldorf joined his company as a partner, which was now developing favorably.

He became a councilor in Werden and, in 1814, Landsturm commander of the Werden district.

Johann Adolf Engels was in Hohenlimburg in his first marriage from 1791 to Katharina Margaretha (1773–1805), a daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Böing (1737–1779) from Hohenlimburg; this was the brother of Johann Heinrich Conrad Böing (1740-1815), the great-great-grandfather of William Edward Boeing , the founder of the Boeing aircraft factory.
