Johann Albrecht von Brandenburg , also Johann Albrecht von Halberstadt or Johann Albrecht von Magdeburg (born September 20, 1499 in Ansbach , Middle Franconia ; † May 17, 1550 in Halle (Saale) ) was (non-ruling) Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach-Bayreuth, Archbishop of Magdeburg and Bishop of Halberstadt .

Life

He was born the son of Friedrich II of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Sophia , the daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland . As early as 1523, his cousin Albrecht von Brandenburg , who was Archbishop of Magdeburg and Mainz and Administrator of Halberstadt, was elected coadjutor of Magdeburg. On the occasion of his final departure from Magdeburg in 1541, he and the cathedral chapter appointed him to be governor in Magdeburg and Halberstadt. In 1545, after Albrecht's death, he became archbishop of Magdeburg and also took over the office of administrator of Halberstadt . At the Diet of 1548 in Augsburg , the emperor confirmed his new bishoprics and on August 24, 1548 he moved into his residence at the Moritzburg in Halle (Saale) . Here he restored the monasteries that were dissolved during the Reformation and resumed Catholic worship in the closed cathedral. However, due to the resolutions of the Halle state parliament, he was unable to enforce the Augsburg interim . During his tenure he tried to stop the Reformation and the confessionalization that went with it by eliminating grievances within his church . This failed him and after his death the time of the Catholic bishops in Halberstadt came to an end.
