Johann Auer (theologian)

Johann Baptist Auer (born May 15, 1910 in Steinweg ; † March 17, 1989 in Regensburg ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and professor of dogmatics and the history of dogma at the universities of Bonn and Regensburg .

Life

Johann Auer was the son of the brewery owner Wilhelm Auer (1872–1945). After studying philosophy and theology Johann Auer 1936, first at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Dr. phil. PhD . In the same year he was ordained a priest in Regensburg . After a short stint as a chaplain in pastoral ministry, he continued his scientific training continued and was established in 1940 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster Dr. theol. PhD. In 1947 he completed his habilitation at Munich University and was appointed private lecturer in the subjects of dogmatics and fundamental theology .

In 1948 he became an associate professor at the Philosophical-Theological University in Freising and in 1950 a full professor at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn. Lucio Gera , Jorge Bergoglio's teacher, was one of his students in Bonn .

In 1968 Auer accepted a call to the Catholic Theological Faculty of the newly founded University in Regensburg, where he taught until his retirement in 1978. In two theological reports he sharply criticized the content of the angel work , whose teachings he traced back to paranoid schizophrenia .
