Johann (es) Below (also Johannes Belovius , Johann (es) Belau and Johann (es) Balau ; * 1601 in Rostock , † December 17, 1668 in Rostock) was a German physician, professor of medicine at the University of Dorpat and personal physician of the Tsars Michael I (Russia) and Alexei I (Russia) .

Life

Johann Below was born in 1601 as the son of the Rostock citizen of the same name . Below studied medicine in Wittenberg , Leipzig , Jena , Erfurt , Helmstedt and Rostock and was awarded a doctorate in Rostock on September 16, 1628. med. PhD . He then worked as a general practitioner in Rostock before he was appointed first professor of medicine at the University of Dorpat on December 22, 1632. At the same time, Below acted as Medicus Ordinarius of the royal court and the city ​​of Dorpat .

In 1634 and 1641 he held the post of rector of the University of Dorpat. Due to the poor endowment of the university and the resulting low number of students, he asked the Governor General to resign as early as 1638. In a letter dated July 14, 1638, he wrote that “for this hour he hadn't heard or seen any of the Studiosum Medicinae here, had someone come here from Pomerania for about half a year”.

Below did not leave the university until 1642, then stayed in Riga from 1642–43 and went from there, with an annual salary of 160 rubles , as personal physician to Grand Duke Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov (1596–1645) and then to Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov (1629 –1676) to Moscow , where he stayed until December 16, 1651. He returned to Germany under the pretext of taking a vacation and failed to comply with several requests to return to Moscow.

His brother Bernhard Below (1611–1692) was also a physician and first as a doctor at the Swedish embassy in Moscow, then as personal physician to the Swedish Queen Christina and her successors Karl X. Gustav and Karl XI. active. In 1661 Johann Below is said to have been visiting his brother in Stockholm . He then returned to Rostock, where he died in 1668.
