He was born in Leipzig in 1720 as the son of the pastor and associate professor of the local university Johann Benedict Carpzov (1670–1733), who in turn was a son of the famous theologian Johann Benedict Carpzov II . First he attended the humanistic Thomas School in Leipzig under the rectors Johann Matthias Gesner and Johann August Ernesti . Carpzov is considered to be one of the last representatives of Lutheran orthodoxy , whose doctrine he laid down on behalf of his sovereign, Duke Karl I Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, in the form of a Liber doctrinalis theologiae purioris (1768).
He received the family-owned Greek manuscript Minuskel 78 from his uncle Johann Gottlob Carpzov .
On September 21, 1756 Carpzov married the daughter of his Helmstedt colleague Johann Konrad Sigismund Topp , Hedwig Christine Charlotte Topp. The marriage had two daughters and one son: Charlotte Justine (born 1757), Wilhelmine Benedicta (1760-1835) and Johann Benedict (born 1764).
