Life

Johann Christian Eschenbach was the eldest son of Christian Ehrenfried Eschenbach (1712–1788), a physician, city physician of Rostock and multiple rector of the University of Rostock . His uncle of the same name Johann Christian Eschenbach ( the elder ; 1719–1759) was also a professor there. He received his first lessons from private teachers and then attended the large city school in Rostock. From 1761 to 1767 he studied law at the university of his hometown, among others with Jacob Heinrich Balecke , professor and Rostock's mayor, and with Joachim Lucas Stein , the commentator on Lübschen law . After another year at the University of Leipzig, he settled in Rostock as a lawyer in 1768.

From 1766 to 1773 he was a collaborator and editor of the "Renewed Reports of Learned Things". In 1778 he graduated from the University of Bützow Dr. jur. with the dissertation “De restitutione in integrum, quae fit brevi manu”. In November of that year he received the professorship of law at the Rostock University as the successor to the late Balecke. He kept this function after the reunification of the Rostock and Bützow universities in 1789. He lectured mainly on Roman law, criminal law, Mecklenburg constitutional law and feudal law. Eschenbach had a great influence at the university; He was elected dean of the Faculty of Law six times and rector of the university six times.

He made an outstanding contribution to Mecklenburg law and the history of scholars in Mecklenburg by publishing the "Annals of the Rostock Academy", which appeared in 13 editions from 1788 to 1805. In addition, he worked for the "Weekly Rostock News and Advertisements". From 1801 he also acted as a lawyer for the citizenship; he was appointed consultant to the second civic quarter (representing the trades).
