Johann Christian Frisch

Johann Christian Frisch (born March 17, 1651 in Linz ; † January / June 1677 in Basel ) was a Basel sculptor and carpenter of Austrian origin.

He came from a family of sculptors and carpenters from Linz. His father was the sculptor Johannes Frisch (1628–1673 / 75). Around 1665 the family moved to Stadtamhof near Regensburg . Johann Christian Frisch came to Basel on his journeyman journey.

There he worked for the widow of Peter Würtz, had converted to the Protestant faith and in the spring of 1675 wished to marry his master, look after her children and take over the workshop. In order to achieve his intentions, he had to acquire citizenship rights in Basel in addition to the guild rights to spinning weather.

As a masterpiece, instead of the four-door cupboard prescribed in the craft regulations, he made an artful extending table, which he honored to the council after its completion in 1676 (today in the Basel Historical Museum ). Two barrel bars from the Basel orphanage (also in the Basel Historical Museum) and a cabinet that is now lost are ascribed to him as other works .

The well-known Lower Bavarian sculptor Johann Gottfried Frisch († 1732) was probably a younger brother of Johann Christian.
