Johann Daniel Eschenburg (born September 9, 1809 in Lübeck ; † February 26, 1884 ibid) was a businessman and politician in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Life

Eschenburg was the son of the pastor at the Jakobikirche in Lübeck, Bernhard Eschenburg (1762–1832) and his second wife Maria Dorothea, née. Havemann, the daughter of the businessman Jost Hinrich Havemann. He learned the merchant trade and took over from his uncle, the Senator Johann Joachim Havemann , his timber business Jost Hinrich Havemann & Sohn . He belonged to the Novgorod drivers and was their senior man . In 1846 he became senator of the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck .

He was one of the founders of the Handelsbank in Lübeck.

A son, Hermann Eschenburg , followed him as owner of the timber business and later became mayor of the city.

His youngest son, August Eschenburg , joined the military as an avantageur after visiting the Katharineum in 1867 . In his military career he rose to the command of the Infantry Regiment No. 128 in Danzig before he returned to his native city in 1902 for the end of his life as a major general .

Eschenburg was awarded the Bene Merenti commemorative coin .

Trivia

After the death of Senator Mann on October 13, 1891, Consul Fehling and the wine merchant Tesdorf were appointed guardians of the five children he left behind.

Thomas Mann was 16 years old at the time. In his novel Die Buddenbrooks , for which he would later receive the Nobel Prize , we meet Carl Tesdorpf as the wine merchant Stephan Kistenmaker , Consul Fehling as Consul Hermann Hagenström and Johann Daniel Eschenburg as Senator Huneus .
