August Eschenburg

Johann August Eschenburg (born April 10, 1848 in Lübeck ; † May 22, 1910 there ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

August was the youngest son of Senator Johann Eschenburg and his wife Elisabeth, née Michels.

After leaving school at Katharineum , which he left before graduation, Eschenburg occurred on July 21, 1867 as three-year volunteer in the Guards Fusilier Regiment of the Prussian army one. There he was promoted to secondary lieutenant on February 9, 1869 after graduating from the Potsdam War School . During the Franco-Prussian War he distinguished himself in the battles of Gravelotte , St. Privat and Sedan in 1870/71 . In recognition of this, he received the Iron Cross, 2nd class. In addition, he took part in the siege of Paris .

After the war he attended the war academy . During this time he was promoted to prime lieutenant. On April 2, 1878, he was posted to the General Staff for three years and on March 22, 1881 he was appointed captain à la suite of the General Staff in the capacity of surveyor. As such, he was transferred to the topographical department of the land survey as an aggregate of the 2nd Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 32 in Meiningen and was appointed company commander on June 14th . In October 1888 he was commissioned to travel to Greece under position à la suite of the Great General Staff and to survey the historically important battlefield of Marathon there.

Back again he was promoted to major on November 18, 1890 . He was appointed commander of a battalion of the infantry regiment "von Courbière" (2nd Posensches) No. 19 on July 28, 1892 and transferred to Görlitz before joining the infantry regiment "von Alvensleben" as a lieutenant colonel on March 22, 1897 (6. Brandenburgisches) No. 52 came to Cottbus . From June 14, 1899 to July 21, 1902 he was in command of Infantry Regiment No. 128 in Danzig . For his services in the troop leadership he was meanwhile on September 14, 1900 with the Red Eagle Order III. Class was awarded the ribbon. With the character as major general up for grabs , he returned to Lübeck for his retirement.

The Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities accepted him as a full member at the meeting of March 3, 1903 .

As a young officer, Eschenburg married his cousin Alma Michels in 1875 . The marriage produced a son and a daughter.

In 1912, like all former Katharineers active in the Franco-Prussian War, a monument was set up by the wine merchant Gerhard von Melle in 1912 through a foundation in the form of a window in the auditorium .
