Johann Daniel Herrnschmidt

Johann Daniel Herrnschmidt (also Herrnschmid or Herrenschmid ; born April 11, 1675 in Bopfingen ; † February 5, 1723 in Halle, Saale ) was a German Protestant theologian and hymn poet.

Life

Herrnschmidt's father Georg Adam Herrnschmidt and grandfather Jakob Adam Herrnschmidt were pastors in Bopfingen. In 1690 Herrnschmidt attended grammar school in Nördlingen ; from 1693 in Heilbronn . He attended the University of Altdorf from 1696 onwards. In 1698 he went to the newly founded University of Halle , where he obtained his master's degree. Here he shaped u. a. August Hermann Francke .

In the spring of 1702, Herrnschmidt became vicar in Bopfingen , in July of the same year a deacon (second preacher), and later a pastor. In 1712, Prince Georg August von Nassau-Idstein , Count of Saarbrücken, appointed him superintendent , court preacher and consistorial councilor in Idstein .

1713, Mr. Schmidt in Halle with the dissertation De peccato acediae (spiritual inertia) for Dr. theol. PhD. In 1715 he was appointed theological professor in Halle by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I. At the same time he became sub-director of the Francke Foundations with supervision of the Latin school there .

Johann Daniel Herrnschmidt was married to Sabina Katharina geb. Black. The couple had eight children, including Georg Ludwig Herrnschmidt . At the end of January 1723 both fell ill with a violent catarrh fever . Herrschmidt died two weeks later; a day later his wife.

Herrnschmidt is one of the most important poets of pietism in Halle . Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen included 17 of his songs in the various editions of the witty hymn book . Today, however, only a few of them are still alive.
