Johann Friedrich Klöffler

Johann Friedrich Klöffler (born April 20, 1725 in Kassel , † February 6, 1790 in Burgsteinfurt ) was a German composer .

Life

Klöffler was born as the son of the school master Johann Caspar and his wife Anna Gela Ilsenius. Not much is known about the first few years of his life. He probably attended the school in Oberneustadt in Kassel where his father was employed. He may have received music lessons from musicians from the Kassel court orchestra, as there were family ties to the court of Prince Wilhelm.

From 1750 he was demonstrably employed as a servant of the court at Burgsteinfurt, the year in which Karl Paul Ernst von Bentheim-Steinfurt (1729–1780) took office in Burgsteinfurt. Count Paul Ernst was a highly educated, art and music-loving prince who was excellent at playing the flute. The promotion of music was a declared aim of his government, because as early as 1752 he established a theater and orchestra, appointed Johann Friedrich Klöffler as concertmaster in 1753 and made him director of music in 1754. Initially, this directory had to be provided free of charge. So the main work of Klöffler remained the financial management of the farm.

At first it was chamber concerts that were performed regularly. After the construction of the Bagno , a concert hall, public symphony concerts were increasingly offered. Klöffler also made his contribution to this with numerous symphonies, chamber music and piano sonatas. Flute music was particularly popular at court, however, and it was clear that Klöffler was particularly challenged here. His flute concerts in particular made a great impression. They were valued in all European courts. His compositions were published several times and his musical reputation reached its peak between 1770 and 1790. He became a member of the “ Utile Dulci ” society in Stockholm , a special honor that he specially traveled to Amsterdam to present . Musically it belonged to the so-called Mannheim School .

From 1781 Johann Friedrich Klöffler went on extensive concert tours. The audience was particularly impressed by his battle symphony with two orchestras, a unique novelty of its time. There is evidence of performances in Amsterdam (1777), Kassel (1781), Frankfurt am Main (1781), Berlin (1781), Hamburg (1782), Lübeck (1782), Copenhagen (1783), London (1783), Braunschweig (1783) ), Königsberg (1783), Riga (1784), Saint Petersburg (1784), Moscow (1784), Wetzlar (1786), Mainz (1786), Augsburg (1786), Munich (1787), Vienna (1787) and Linz ( 1787).

In 1786 he was relieved of age from the management of the court orchestra and given the position of first violinist, but he remained Director Musice. In addition to his career as a composer and musician, he did his court service in the financial administration and rose to the position of secret financial assessor (1780). Various remarks by Klöffler on financial management, tannery, postal services and "How to use your capital with the greatest benefit" are proven.

Dismissed from service in 1789 in full honor, he died on February 6, 1790 in Burgsteinfurt.
