Johann Friedrich Roos (born February 24, 1757 in Stein-Bockenheim , † December 24, 1804 ) was a German schoolboy and philologist .

Life

Johann Friedrich Roos was the son of a pastor in Steinbockenheim. After the early death of his father, he accompanied his mother to Darmstadt , where he attended high school from 1768. From 1775 he studied theology and philology at the University of Giessen . In 1777 he returned to Darmstadt and worked here under Helfrich Bernhard Wenck's supervision with the organization of the court library and the preparation of a catalog of its holdings. In 1778 he continued his studies in Erlangen .

In Erlangen, Roos obtained his master's degree on April 20, 1780 and wanted to do his habilitation as a private lecturer, but then accepted a position as fourth full teacher at the pedagogy in Gießen and began lectures on Hebrew , Greek and English at the same time . He became third in 1781, second in 1783, first teacher and associate professor in philosophy in 1784 , full professor in 1789, pedagogue in 1799 and history professor in 1803 . Among other things, he translated the Odes of Horace (Leipzig 1791) and the Comedies of Terence (2 volumes, Gießen 1794–1796), but died on December 24, 1804 at the age of 47.

Roos' early death was a great loss for the university and school, because he had a sound philological and historical knowledge and carried out his offices conscientiously. The frequency of the grammar school he reformed rose from 65 to 140 students, many of whom were foreigners.
