Johann Georg Allgeyer the Elder (* around 1670 in Hofen or Neunstadt , † after 1724 in Hofen) was a German organ builder and founder of the Hofen organ building workshop.

Life

Where exactly Allgeyer was born is debatable. The church records Hofens exhibit at the relevant time gaps. It is said that his father worked in Hofen. Documentary evidence indicates Neunstadt near Röhlingen, about 9.6 km as the crow flies, as the place of origin: "Organarius de Neunstadt, hoc tempore in Hofen" (ie organ maker from Neunstadt, currently in Hofen). In the parish of Röhlingen, however, the church records did not start until 1688, i.e. after his presumed due date.

Allgeyer came from a family of carpenters . He was the second-born son of Balthasar Allgeyer the Elder. Ä. (around 1640 – around 1720) and grandson of Kaspar Allgeyer (around 1615–1673). His younger brother Kaspar (1674 – around 1720) worked as a carpenter in Attenhofen ; his older brother Balthasar d. J. (around 1666–1739) probably worked in Allgeyer's workshop. In 1698 he married his wife Barbara Stirm from Niederalfingen . The marriage resulted in three sons: His eldest son Joseph left the family business and founded the Wasseralfingen organ building workshop. His second born son Johannes (1712–1782) became a carpenter. The youngest son Johann Georg d. J. worked in his parents' business and took it over after Allgeyer's death.

It is not known from which master Allgeyer learned the trade of organ building. He founded his workshop around the time of his marriage.

Allgeyer created numerous much eloquent works. These can be found in Heubach 1701/02, in the town church of St. Dionys in Esslingen am Neckar from 1706, in the Crailsheimer Johanneskirche 1706 as well as the Liebfrauenkapelle 1709/10, Königsbronn 1710, Ellrichshausen 1711, in the Schönenbergkirche in Ellwangen 1711/14 , in the Marienkirche Bad Mergentheim 1716, in the parish church Neresheim 1717, Seißen 1717, in the St. Andreas church in Weißenburg in Bavaria 1719, in the castle church Ellingen 1719, as well as in Sontheim an der Brenz 1721. Organ repairs and additions were made performed in Königsbronn in 1710 and in the St. Vitus Basilica in Ellwangen in 1724.
