Johann Georg Hämmerl the Younger is the son of the painter Joseph Hämmerle (or Hamerl) (* December 24, 1727 in Velburg , † March 9, 1783 in Kallmünz ) and his wife Eva, née. Hofmann, a turner's daughter from Laaber. In 1769 the couple lived in Laaber, from 1776 in Kallmünz.

Johann Georg married Margareta Zenger on January 26, 1793. The Zenger come from the Grünbaum inn in Kallmünz; There are said to have been many oil paintings in the house and its wooden ceilings are probably still painted today (but can no longer be seen as the ceiling was covered by chipboard). Their son Georg Joseph Hämmerl was born to them on February 7, 1793. The Hämmerl's house was the Kramerhaus am Graben, formerly house number 151, now house number 8. The second son Johann Karl was born on July 20, 1797. His father found him a place at the royal college in Regensburg; In 1813 the son received a third prize in drawing. The first son was sent to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1815 , he became a famous porcelain and glass painter at the royal porcelain manufactory (today Porzellanmanufaktur Nymphenburg ).

A document dated May 1, 1821, was signed by Johann Georg as mayor of Kallmünz and as chairman of the Scapular Brotherhood . On his death parte he is called the "painter and prefect of the Brotherhood here earlier consul (= market council) and Centurion (= Captain) of the militia."

The earliest work by Johann Georg is the altarpiece in the Church of St. Laurentius in Bergstetten near Laaber , which he painted when he was 20 years old. He also various originate votive paintings , so one of 1796 from the Miesberg Church in Schwarzenfeld and two in the Kreuzberg Church of Schwandorf (destroyed in the bombing Schwandorfs on April 17, 1945). The left altarpiece in the plague chapel at Auberg near Kallmünz (VIII. Station of the Cross) dates from 1798. In the parish church of Kallmünz he set the figure of Mary with child in 1813, the tabernacle in 1815 and the four statues on the high altar in 1826. In 1816 a way of the cross (oil on sheet metal) was created for the way of the cross in Burglengenfeld . In addition, he presumably painted the Mariahilf picture from 1817 in the chapel “Our Dear Lady” in Fischbach near Kallmünz .

Between 1798 and 1803 Hämmerl recorded places in the former Duchy of Palatinate-Neuburg in 70 pen drawings ; Exceptions are the Hofmarken zu Lauterbach, Unterweikersdorf and Oberbechingen outside the duchy. He made views of 46 places, court marks, hammer locks and monasteries, with two images of 25 places each. The pictures are available in two series: One consists of the 28 graphics in watercolors that are kept in the Historisches Museum Regensburg , the other 43 graphics, which are privately owned, have a sepia tint and are slightly larger. A client for this work is not known, the family of the Tänzels, who u. a. was resident in Dietldorf and Oberbechingen and had family ties to the owners of Lauterbach and Unterweikersdorf. The work also continues the series of approx. 1000 copper engravings by Michael Wening , which he made on behalf of the Bavarian Elector Max Emanuel for the rent offices in Munich , Landshut and Straubing .
