Johann Georg Ziesenis the Elder (also: Johann Jürgen Ziesenis and Hans Ziesenis ; baptized 1681 in Hanover ; died March 20, 1748 in Copenhagen ) was a German court painter at the Danish court.

Life

According to various sources, Johann Georg Ziesenis the Elder was born in 1680 or 1681 - there is also at least one source with the year 1688 - and baptized in 1681 in the royal seat of the then Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg as the sixth child of the kit maker , writing schoolmaster and later Ludimagister of the Catholic community Dietrich Ziesenis or Dietrich Theodor Ziesenis and his second wife Anna Katharina Lomans. The Catholic community around the Clemenskirche settled in the Calenberger Neustadt .

In accordance with the internationality of Europe that was common in the 18th century, Ziesenis emigrated from his Low German homeland in order to find a livelihood abroad. In 1709 he became a citizen of Copenhagen and was appointed court painter at the court of King Friedrich IV .

In 1716 Zieseni's son Johann Georg Ziesenis the Younger was born in Copenhagen .

Nothing of the painter's works may have survived. The Danish historian Carl Frederik Bricka mentioned in his writings a portrait of Ziesenis depicting the baptism of Christ . The painting should be "in the Hedwig's Church in Copenhagen ". There were also suspicions that Ziesenis had " painted Balthasar Denner 's robes" for the Danish painter .
