Johann Giner the Elder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Giner the Elder (born May 8, 1756 in Thaur , Tyrol ; † April 20, 1833 there ) was an Austrian sculptor and nativity scene carver. His and his family's work made Thaur the center of Tyrolean nativity art for a century .

Life

Johann Giner was the younger son of Blasius Giner and his second wife Maria Wieser; his brother was Romedius Giner, his half-brother the painter Franz Giner. He was a student of the sculptor Josef Anton Renn in Imst from around 1770 . According to tradition, Giner is said to have come to Ignaz Günther on his wandering to Munich , where he is said to have passed his master craftsman examination. Then he returned to Thaur, where he worked as a wood sculptor and nativity scene carver. In 1788 he took over his father's house, the Blasiger-Erbhof in Thaur, which is still owned by his descendants today. In 1796 he married Maria Lamparter, with whom he had five sons, including the crib carver Johann Giner the Younger. He distinguished himself in the Tyrolean struggle for freedom against the French, so that he received a letter of arms in 1797 (confirmed in 1818).

Johann Giner the Elder worked exclusively as a wood sculptor and carver. His works include several figures of apostles and church fathers at the high altar and side altars in the parish church in Thaur and in the old parish church of Wattens , two angels in the Innsbruck court church , several crucifixes, a Maria in Gossensaß (1793) and the four evangelists in Oberndorf near Salzburg .

He achieved supra-regional importance as a nativity scene carver. His cribs are among the most beautiful Tyrolean works of this genre. Typical of his design is his interest in the relationship between the figures, which often appear in pairs, which neglects the overall composition of the crib. Many of the larger figures (over 15 cm) mostly have glass eyes. Giner made large church cribs (for Thaur, Breitenbach am Inn , Absam and the Salzburg Cathedral ), which stylistically can be assigned to Classicism , but also house cribs, such as those at the Schottenbauer in Thaur, in the Crib Museum in Brixen and in the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum , even more are arrested in the Rococo .
