Johann Heinrich Eisträger (* 1730 in Kassel ; † 1788 ibid) was a German landscape , battle and porcelain painter who worked in the Fürstenberg and Kassel factories .

Live and act

Eisträger received training as a landscape and battle picture painter before he was employed in the Fürstenberg porcelain factory in 1754. That is why he established landscape painting there together with the artists Daniel Christian Ostertag and Johann Friedrich von Metzsch and has been one of the most important artists of this genre in the Fürstenberg manufactory since 1760. The early works of the three painters are difficult to assign to the respective artist due to their similar designs. In addition to landscapes, Eisträger painted battle scenes or portraits, such as a miniature portrait of a lady from 1767, which later found its place in the Kassel Museum and is now considered lost. In 1768 he moved to the porcelain factory in Kassel to take up a position as head of painting. For his monochrome painting he used in particular the colors purple , iron red or rust brown (what was called "en Camaïeu"), but also made polychrome landscape pictures , such as a view of Mulang on Wilhelmshöhe . Since 1778 he was entitled "Chief Painter". Other works are the portraits of Landgraves Carl and Friedrich II on a tableau , as well as a bust of Friedrich that Eisträger painted. Although always referred to as a landscape and battle painter, portraits based on models by Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder and Hermann Hendrik de Quiter the Younger can also be identified. In addition to porcelain painting, Eisträger also made watercolors in 1772, such as a view of Kassel with the old Fulda Bridge .
