Johann Heinrich Justus Köppen (born November 15, 1755 in Hanover ; died November 9, 1791 there ) was a German classical philologist and teacher .

Life

Johann Heinrich Justus Köppen was the son of a Hanoverian businessman. In 1773 he went to the Lyceum in his hometown and from 1776 studied at the University of Göttingen . There he was particularly encouraged by Christian Gottlob Heyne , who recommended him to the pedagogy in Ilefeld three years later . In 1783 Köppen went to the Andreanum grammar school in Hildesheim and in 1791 as a second teacher to the lyceum in the old town of Hanover, where he stayed until his early death.

Köppen is the author of writings for school lessons to understand the ancient classics such as Homer , Horace , Ovid , Sophocles and Plato .
