Johann Heinrich Speich

Johann Heinrich Speich (born November 19, 1813 in Luchsingen , † June 19, 1891 in Glarus ) was a Swiss alpinist and a founding member of the Swiss Alpine Club .

Life

Johann Heinrich Speich was the son of a carpenter, shoemaker and community politician (village governor). He was pattern makers ( Dessinateur ) in the textile printing industry in Glarus . He later bore the alliance name Speich-Jenny and, like his father, also became a village governor and also a councilor in Glarus.

As an alpinist, he appeared on what was probably the second ascent of Piz Russein , the highest Tödigipfel , on August 8, 1859, together with Th. Von Hallwyl from Bern , H. von Sprecher from Chur and the guides father and son Thut and Gabriel Vögeli from Linthal .

On April 19, 1863 he was one of the 35 men who founded the Swiss Alpine Club in the Olten train station buffet .

The Speichstock (2967 m) between Gemsfairenstock and Clariden is named after Johann Heinrich Speich , which he and his companions climbed for the first time on August 10, 1863 as part of the official SAC expedition.

In 1880 he became an honorary member of the Tödi section of the Swiss Alpine Club.
