Johann Jordan (Bishop)
Johann Jordan (* 1491 or 1494 in the hamlet of Bach near Ried-Brig ; † June 12, 1565 in Sitten ) was Prince-Bishop of Sitten .
Career
Johann Jordan was the son of Johann Jordan and Paulosina. He was mentioned for the first time in 1523 as Commendatarprior of Martigny and in 1524 as Pastor of Bagnes . As early as 1527 he appeared as Canon of Sitten . District administrator and cathedral chapter elected him in 1548 to succeed the late Adrian von Riedmatten as bishop of Sion and count and prefect of Valais. In the same year he went to Rome to have his confirmation by Pope Paul III. to get.
His reign was marked by several religious upheavals triggered by political decisions. The renewal of the alliance with France led to the drinking bull war in 1550. The Erner uprising, which ended in 1563, was a consequence of the Lyon procession that took place in 1562.
In 1550 he visited some parishes of his diocese and in 1558 consecrated the church in Unterbäch . Despite the invitation by Pope Julius III. and Emperor Charles V he did not take part in the second session of the Council of Trent . It was not until 1562 that he was represented by Johann Miles, Abbot of Saint-Maurice . There was no reform of the church and the clergy. He left his natural children a generous legacy, which enabled them to lead a decent life.
