Johann Karl Ludwig Gieseler

Johann Karl Ludwig Gieseler (born March 3, 1792 in Petershagen , † July 8, 1854 in Göttingen ) was a German Lutheran theologian and church historian .

Live and act

After attending the orphanage school and university in Halle , he took part in the Wars of Liberation from November 1813 and became a teacher in Halle in 1814. In 1817 he became vice principal at the grammar school in Minden and in 1818 director in Kleve .

On the basis of a work on the transmission of the Gospels, Gieseler was appointed professor of theology in Bonn in 1819 . In 1830/31 he was the rector of the university. In 1831 he moved to the University of Göttingen and was appointed consistorial councilor there in 1837 .

Gieseler was accepted into the Masonic lodge Zu den Drei Degen in Halle in 1817 and from 1822 was the master of the chair of the Lodge Augusta to the golden circle in Göttingen.

In 1844 he was elected a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Works

Gieseler's main work is the textbook of church history in 5 volumes. He edited the first 3 volumes himself (Bonn 1824–1835), Ernst Rudolf Redepenning published volumes 4 and 5 in 1855–1857 and added the 6th volume, Dogmengeschichte .
