Johann Ludwig von Güldenstubbe , also Johann Ludwig Baron von Güldenstubbe (* December 24, 1817 jul. / January 5,  1818 greg. In Kaali (German Sall ) on Ösel ; † May 27, 1873 in Paris ; buried in Heidelberg ), was a Baltic-Swedish nobleman , philosopher , spiritualist and esotericist .

Life

Johann Ludwig Baron von Güldenstubbe, as he was called in professional circles, dealt with table backs and researched in the field of " direct writing ", which he interpreted spiritistically. Güldenstubbe has been concerned with the phenomenon of " knocking on the table " and " magnetism " for over 20 years . He organized mainly in Paris spiritualistic circles, at which well-known people are said to have shown themselves. In order to make the "direct writing" known as ghost script also verifiable to others, he carried out spiritualistic experiments , after one of his most successful sessions he wrote:

“On that eternally memorable day, we reached 30 ghost writings by placing the paper on a small glass table; Strangely enough, however, the side of the paper where the pencil was located was never written on, but the mysterious lettering was always found on the side that was placed against the glass plate and hidden from human sight "

In the course of 12 years, in the presence of witnesses, Güldenstübbe received over 2000 such ghost writings, which were written in more than 20 languages. Julie von Güldenstubbe

His sister Julie Wilhelmine von Güldenstubbe (1827–1888) lived with him in Paris and was also buried in Heidelberg. She accompanied the philosophical work of her brother as a medium and was editor and publisher of his scientific writings. Furthermore, it is said to be the French Emperor Napoleon III. Johann Ludwig v. G. came from the old Baltic-Swedish noble family of the Güldenstubbe , who produced important personalities on the Baltic island of Ösel. His grandfather, Carl Gustav von Güldenstubbe (1739–1814), was an aristocratic marshal from Oösel , district administrator and state councilor. His parents were the district judge Alexander Georg von Güldenstubbe (1786–1848) and his wife Anette Christine Elisabeth, born von Vietinghoff (1794–1843). His older brother Karl Friedrich von Güldenstubbe (1816–1862) was an Oeselian land marshal . Johann Ludwig was unmarried and had no offspring.

Major works

  • In his 1857 and 1873, written in French, major work “Positive Pneumatology. The reality of the spirit world, as well as the phenomenon of the ghosts' writing. Historical overview of the spiritualism of all times and peoples. ”He dealt with the phenomenon of direct writing, which he interpreted spiritistically.
  • Together with his sister Julie, he published “Thoughts of the Spirits from Beyond the Grave” (Paris 1875, Basel 1879) in 1875 and 1879.
