Johann Michael Iwanowitsch von Benckendorff (also known as: "Ioann-Mihail (Ivan)" and "Hermann von Benckendorff"; Russian Иоганн Михаэль фон Бенкендорф ; * March 30, 1720 in Reval ; † November 18, 1775 in Reval) was a lieutenant general in the Imperial Russian Army . He came from the Estonian-Swedish noble family of the "von Benckendorff" .

Military career

Johann Michael first served as a page to Tsar Peter II (1727–1730) , after which he was chamberlain to Tsarina Anna (1730–1740). He received his officer license in 1740 and had his first military service in the Russo-Swedish War of 1741–1743 . In 1755 he was promoted to colonel and took command of the Morum Infantry Regiment.

In 1758 he was wounded in the Battle of Zorndorf , and in 1759 he was promoted to Brigadier General . Tsar Peter III (1761–1762) appointed him as city ​​commander of Narva in Estonia and promoted him to major general ; an infantry regiment was subordinate to him. In 1763 he took command of a division in Saint Petersburg and in 1771 moved to Reval as lieutenant general and commander in chief . In 1773 he received the Estonian Indigenous .

Johann Michael's parents were Johann IV von Benckendorff (1659–1727) and von Schultzen (* between 1642 and 1671 † 1731), born from the second marriage to Klara.
