Johann Nikolaus Tischer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Nikolaus Tischer (* 1707 in Böhlen ; † May 3, 1774 in Schmalkalden ) was a German organist and composer .

The statement that Tischer was a student of Johann Sebastian Bach is incorrect. Tischer received his first lessons from the organist of the village church, Johann Balthasar Rauche. In 1722 he was referred by sponsors as a scribe to Halberstadt , where he also received musical training from the cathedral organist Graf. In Arnstadt and Rudolstadt he continued his training in composition and violin with Kapellmeister Schweitzelberg and Johann Graf , among others . In 1728 he joined the guard regiment of Duke August Wilhelm von Braunschweig as an oboist . After his death in 1731 he became court and town organist in Schmalkalden, which he remained until the end of his life. Tischer had been ailing since 1765 and was increasingly represented by his pupil Johann Gottfried Vierling , who received the post in 1768 and was his successor after Tischer's death in 1774.

Tischer composed concerts for various instruments, two violin sonatas , symphonies , overtures and church music . For the harpsichord he wrote suites , divertissements , partitas and concerts .

Tischer was a popular composer all his life, which was particularly true of the educational value of his piano works. Later research judged these works, however, as "meaningless, trivial, very loose in form and extremely homophonic".
