Johann Ofner

Johann Ofner (born November 6, 1816 in Nauders ; † July 16, 1887 St. Pölten ) was an Austrian politician ( German Liberal Party and its successor parties), a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament and the Reichsrat, and the 10th mayor of St. Pölten.

Life

Johann Ofner was born on November 6, 1816 in Nauders, Tyrol, the son of a businessman. He attended a grammar school in Merano , briefly studied philosophy at the University of Trento before completing his law degree in Innsbruck . In 1848 or 1849 he settled in St. Pölten as a lawyer . In 1850 he was elected as a member of the German liberal party in the first St. Pölten municipal council, of which he was a member until his election as mayor in 1870. In addition, Ofner was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament from 1861 until his death .

He was also sent to the Reichsrat , the first time in 1861. In his first term of office, he was a member of numerous committees, with his help, among other things, the Stamp and Fees Act of 1862 was drawn up. In 1867, as an opponent of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise , he waived re-election.

After his party had split up in the wake of the founding conflict, he stood for one of the successor parties, the "Association of Friends of the Constitution", for the 1873 Reichsrat election. Shortly afterwards he was a member of the Progress Party . When this merged with the constitutional party to form the United Left , he switched to this party. As early as 1885 he split up with parts of his party and founded the German Club . In 1882 he resigned from the office of mayor. This is likely to have been mainly due to the attacks by his party colleague and former employee Karl Heitzler in the St. Pöltner Wochenblatt . Until he handed over his law firm to his son Hermann Ofner in 1884 , he always worked as a lawyer as well, doing legal transactions for the city of St. Pölten free of charge.

Johann Ofner died on July 16, 1887, as an active member of the Landtag and Reichsrat, in St. Pölten to Marasmus and was buried at the main cemetery.
