Johann Pölzer (born January 30, 1872 in Alt-Petrein , Moravia , † April 21, 1934 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician ( SDAPDÖ ).

Life

Johann Pölzer was born in 1872 in the small Moravian village of Alt-Petrein as the son of a small farmer. At the age of 14 he was sent to Vienna by his parents to learn the trade of tailor .

He first came into contact with social democracy in the Ottakring district of Vienna . After moving to Favoriten , he became involved in building up the local social democratic district organization, of which he became chairman in 1897 and remained until his death in 1934. He was known as the tribune of the people who personally took care of the problems of the population in his district and was always ready to listen to everyone.

After the sudden death of his wife Amalia in 1924, he devoted himself increasingly to party work. Many leading party officials such as Victor Adler , Otto Bauer and Karl Renner valued his opinion.

From 1908 to 1919 he was a member of the state parliament as a representative of the Favoriten constituency , as Vienna was still part of Lower Austria at that time . From 1920 to 1934 he was a member of the National Council . Other party functions were a member of the Vienna City Council and the federal party executive.

In February 1934 he was treated for the first time in hospital for his heart condition. After the outbreak of the civil war , he wanted to go back to Favoriten, but was arrested there and taken back to the hospital, where he died a few weeks later. His grave is at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

In his honor, a residential complex in the Favoriten district was named Pölzerhof after him.

The Viennese community politician and member of the National Council Johann Pölzer junior (1903–1964) was his son.
