Johann Pasquich

Johann Pasquich (* around 1753 probably in Senj ; † November 15, 1829 in Vienna ) was a Hungarian-Austrian astronomer and mathematician.

Life

Originally a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Zengg, Pasquich took up a position in 1784 as an adjunct at the physics department at Pest University . In 1789 he became a full professor of mathematics, but gave up the position in 1797 for health reasons. In 1798 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

After staying at the observatories in Vienna and Gotha , he returned to the university in 1802 and in 1803 was given the post of second astronomer at the university observatory in Buda . In 1807 he became its director and at the same time professor of astronomy at the university. Pasquich was entrusted with the selection of a location and the instruments for a new observatory. The new observatory on Blocksberg in Buda was inaugurated in October 1815 . Pasquich ran this observatory until he retired in 1824.

During his professorship in mathematics, Pasquich mainly worked on analysis and its application to the theory of machines. As a professor of astronomy, he dealt, among other things, with position determination and studies of the shape of the earth. He wrote several textbooks, in particular an introduction to mathematics and an introduction to astronomical calculation methods.

When his assistant Daniel Kmeth publicly claimed because of a falling out that Pasquich had falsified observations of the comet from 1821 in order to bring them into better agreement with the results of other astronomers, Pasquich was replaced by HC Schumacher , FW Bessel , W. Olbers , JF Encke and CF. Gauss rehabilitated.
