Johann Peter Benkert
Johann Peter Benkert (born November 11, 1709 in Neuhaus near Neustadt an der Saale ; † December 14, 1765 or 1769 in Potsdam ) was court sculptor in Bamberg and from 1745 innkeeper in Potsdam.
Life
The son of the pan smith Johann Benkert, born in Neuhaus, was baptized in 1709 in the parish church of Neustadt . He probably learned the profession of sculptor in Königshofen from Johann Joseph Keßler . After completing his apprenticeship, he went on a hike and was verifiably in Eichstätt and Munich , possibly he also came to Vienna . In Eichstätt he was employed by Kaspar Eygen . In the mid-1730s he was Franz Anton Schlott's journeyman in Bamberg. After his death in 1739 he married the widow, daughter of the court plasterer Johann Jakob Vogel . In 1744 he moved to Potsdam and furnished the Sanssouci Palace and Park ; Among other things, he created the Neptune Grotto in the years 1751–1757, which has been under renovation and restoration since 2005. After the death of Gottfried Emanuel von Einsiedel , he took over the inn run by this Potsdam inn in 1745 and named it Zum Einsiedler . The house was destroyed in 1945, only the sign created by Benkert for the inn and later hotel remained in the Potsdam Museum.
He died there on December 14, 1765 and was buried in the old cemetery . His grave monument was still in place in the early 1950s.
Other places where he worked were Ebrach , Langheim Abbey , Lichtenfels , Forchheim and Gößweinstein .
