Johann Rieder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Rieder (* 1633 in Erl in Tyrol , † 1715 in Rosenheim ) was the first court and body ship master of the Electorate of Bavaria .

Life

As the first and only son of a brewer, Johann Rieder was supposed to take over the brewery , but the passion for shipping on the Inn was stronger. From a young age he was known for his tax skills. And luck also played into his hands, because he was allowed to steer the ship of the future Electress of Bavaria. When the mother died, there was a falling out with the father. Then Johann took his things and hired as a raftsman and, for the winter months, as a courier with the Prince-Bishop of Kempten . In just a few years he was promoted to master raftsman here.

Through his work as a raftsman for several Benedictine monasteries, he came back from the Iller to the Inn. In 1659 he applied for citizenship in Rosenheim, which was granted to him on August 18, 1660. Thereupon he married the widow of the ship master Cronperger in the same year and took over his trade as ship master, grain dealer and wine owner. Soon afterwards his son Joseph Rieder was born. In the following years he became prosperous and enjoyed a great reputation in the city and also with the rafters on the Inn. In 1669 he was elected to the Outer Council of the city and another 29 years later to the Inner Council, which consisted of six men who alternately held the office of mayor.

As a thank you and honor for his achievements on the many trips of the electoral court from Wasserburg to Vienna and back, he was awarded the title of court and ship master. In 1671 he was given an even greater honor when he received a coat of arms for himself and his descendants.

During the Great Turkish War he drove soldiers and ammunition down the Inn and Danube into Hungary and as far as Belgrade . He was arrested on July 19, 1703 in Tyrol and was released during a prisoner exchange between Rosenheim and Tyrol in 1704. In 1712 he ended his activity as a ship master due to his age and health.

The Johann-Rieder-Realschule Rosenheim was named after him in 2005.
