Johann Seivert (pseudonyms: Johann Trevies, Johann Strevei, S **; * April 17, 1735 in Hermannstadt , † April 27, 1785 in Hammersdorf ) was a Transylvanian-Saxon historian and poet. He wrote the first published German-language dictionary of writers in his region and is considered a pioneering researcher in the field of inscription research and numismatics .

Life

Johann Seivert was born into a middle-class family in Sibiu. His parents were Daniel Seivert (tailor and member of the city council) and Agnetha Gierlich. From 1751 Seivert studied at the Hermannstädter Gymnasium. The then rector of the Hermannstädter Gymnasium, Andreas Schun, played a decisive role in the upbringing of the young Seivert . In 1754, the 19-year-old Seivert passed a public examination which was so successful that he was able to study abroad. Seivert then studied theology and philosophy at the University of Helmstedt for three years . After his return, Seivert initially taught as a teacher at the Hermannstädter Gymnasium, where he was an associate professor , then a collaborator and finally vice principal . In 1764 Seivert gave up teaching and became a deacon of the monastery church of St. Elisabeth in Sibiu, then Wednesday preacher and from March 8, 1771 archdeacon or city preacher at the Parochial Church. A few months later, on November 16, 1771, he was called to the parish of Hammersdorf, where he worked as a pastor until his death.

Seivert also dealt with numismatics and built up a large and valuable collection of Roman and Transylvanian coins, which after his death was bought by the royal Transylvanian court advisor Johann Nepomuk Graf Esterházy and the Brukenthal coin collection .
