Lukas Joseph Marienburg (born July 4, 1770 in Kronstadt , † August 8, 1821 in Marienburg ) was a Transylvanian historian and geographer . Marienburg was a teacher and rector in Kronstadt and pastor in Rothbach , Weidenbach and Marienburg. He was best known for his historical and geographical descriptions of Transylvania.

Life

Lukas, also Lucas , Joseph Marienburg was born the son of the preacher Christian Marienburg. His mother Anna Maria was born Rauß. He attended grammar school in Kronstadt and studied philosophy and Protestant theology at the University of Jena from 1789 to 1791 . His professors in Jena included Johann Jakob Griesbach and Johann Christoph Döderlein .

In November 1791 Marienburg was hired as a teacher at the Kronstadt grammar school and was appointed lecturer there in 1793 . In August 1801 he was appointed headmaster of the school. Under his direction a new classification was made and a new primer, which he wrote himself and which has remained in use for many years, introduced. As early as 1800 he expanded the history lessons of the upper classes of the grammar school with Transylvanian history. He provided better teaching aids and introduced new school books, including August Hermann Niemeyer's handbook for the upper religious classes and Friedrich Wilhelm Döring's instructions for translation into Latin . He also planned to include natural history and natural science in the curriculum of the high school. The attempt to establish an independent country school teacher seminar next to the grammar school failed because of the financial possibilities at the time.

In June 1810 Marienburg was elected pastor of Rothbach, in January 1812 he worked as such in Weidenbach. In July 1813 the parish of Marienburg appointed him to their parish office. But just five years later, in the summer of 1818, he had a stroke that made him physically and mentally weak. After two further strokes Luke Joseph Marienburg committed on 8 August 1821 at the age of 51 years, in the Transylvanian Marienburg suicide . He was married to Johanna Elisabetha (1776–1866), née Clompe, since 1798. The couple had six children, four sons and two daughters. Because of his services, the ducal mineralogical society of Jena appointed him a member in December 1804 and an external assessor on May 8, 1805. Both diplomas were signed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Lukas Joseph Marienburg left an extensive body of literature . His attempt on a state and religious history of Transylvania was published as early as 1796 . In the same year he published the first volume of his four-volume work Instructions on the German Style. A guide for teachers and students , the last volume of which appeared in 1797. In 1802 he reissued the textbook of religion, following the instructions of the Lutheri catechism by Johann Christian Förster with a detailed foreword for the Kronstadt schools. His ABC book for schools in Burzenland appeared in 1803 and subsequently saw numerous editions. The Little Transylvanian History , which provided Marienburg with an extensive historical-critical apparatus, was published in 1806. After many years of preparatory work, his Geography of the Grand Duchy of Transylvania appeared in two volumes in 1813 , the first of which contained the general geography, the second the geography and topography of the country. He published smaller essays in the Transylvania quarterly and in the Transylvanian provincial papers, and he edited the Kronstadt calendar from 1801 to 1810.
