Johann Tarnow , also Johannes Tarnovius (born April 19, 1586 in Grevesmühlen , † January 22, 1629 in Rostock ) was a German Protestant - Lutheran theologian and university professor.

Life

Johann Tarnow was the son of Pastor Hermann Tarnow in Grevesmühlen. Paul Tarnow was his uncle. He attended the Katharineum in Lübeck and in 1603 the Academic Gymnasium Hamburg . From April 1604 he studied Protestant theology at the University of Rostock . He went on a study trip that took him to Giessen , Jena and Wittenberg and in 1613 to Strasbourg and Baselled. In 1614 he received his master's degree in Strasbourg. In the same year he returned to Rostock and was appointed ducal full professor of theology. In 1619 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. In his research he mainly dealt with the books of the Old Testament and wrote several commentaries.

Around 1620 he belonged, together with his friends Joachim Jungius and Johann Adolf Tassius , to a circle in Rostock that dealt with the writings of Johann Valentin Andreaes . This resulted in the Societas ereunetica sive zezetica in 1622 , the first scientific society in Germany.
