Johann Theodor Axer

Johann Theodor Axer (* 1700 in Paderborn , † 29. December 1764 in Buren ) was a Westphalian sculptor and -schnitzer of the Baroque .

life and work

Nothing is known about his training. He may have studied in southern Germany for a while. He first worked in the Paderborn area . He created fountains and worked as a sculptor on castles. So he was employed at the residential palace in Neuhaus . Later he apparently turned to the manufacture of church furnishings . He had the title of court sculptor.

He created parts of the Liborifest Altar for the Paderborn Cathedral . This is now on display in the Diocesan Museum. For the Maria Immaculata church in Büren, he created the figures for the outer facade. In Rietberg he worked for the Franciscan monastery .

He also worked as a carver for numerous churches in the Duchy of Westphalia . He created numerous portraits for the side altars of the church in Bödefeld . He also carved the figures for the Way of the Cross there. He received a major order from the Grafschaft monastery for the production of 18 statues for the monastery church. Works by him can also be found in Warstein or Wormbach . For the Oelinghausen monastery he made a mount of olives group. The high altar of the parish church in Freienohl also comes from him.

He lived in Paderborn between 1725 and 1737. Later he changed his place of residence frequently during his professional life and often lived for a long time at the place of his assignment. One of his students was Johann Leonhard Falter .
