Johann Ulrich Krauss , also Kraus or Krauss (* 1655 in Augsburg ; † 1719 there ) was a German draftsman , engraver and publisher in Augsburg.

Life

He came from a family of painters, engravers and artists in Augsburg since the 16th century and was the son of Ulrich Krauss .

Krauss learned his handicrafts in Augsburg from Melchior Küsel (1626 – ca. 1683), a student of Matthäus Merians the Elder . Ä. (1593-1650). After several years in Vienna , Krauss joined the Augsburg publishing house Melchior Küsels. In 1685 he married his daughter Johanna Sibylla Küsel .

Supported by his wife, who also worked as a copper engraver, Kraus soon became one of the most respected and productive copper engravers in Augsburg, and his publishing business became known and successful. He is said to have even rejected offers from various royal courts .

His publishing house seems to have been badly affected by the devastation of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), but he was soon able to resume production: in 1717, the tax book of the city of Augsburg showed him to be a wealthy citizen.

Act

Krauss campaigned for the recognition of German copper engraving throughout his life. So he gave z. B. repeatedly published the French edition of the two “Tapisserie-Cycles” ( Tapisseries du roy ) together with a complete German translation. In the preface he justified his publishing interest in this work from the circle of the French King Louis XIV with the intention of demonstrating to Emperor Leopold I (1640–1705) that German engraving is by no means inferior to the French. He also played an effective role in conveying French motifs, for example from Gabriel Perelle to German painters and artisans such as Johann Schaper . For the Kurbayerischen Atlas of Anton Wilhelm Ertl he created numerous views of Bavarian towns, castles and monasteries. His "Historical Picture Bible" in 5 volumes from 1698 to 1700 is considered a high point of the Augsburg copperplate engraving.
