Johann Ulrich Walser

Johann Ulrich Walser (born February 28, 1798 in Teufen ; † March 30, 1866 in Basel ; resident in Teufen) was a Swiss Reformed theologian , pastor , publicist and politician from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Ulrich Walser was a son of Johann Jakob Walser, doctor and pharmacist , and Anna Katharina Eugster. He attended the Schaffhausen high school. From 1815 to 1817 he studied theology in Tübingen . In 1818 he married Maria Juliana Hurter, daughter of Johann Heinrich Hurter, doctor and pharmacist. From 1817 to 1832 he was pastor in Grub AR and from 1833 to 1837 in Liestal . From 1838 he was the printer's owner and publisher in Liestal, Reinach BL , Arlesheim and from 1843 in Birsfelden . In Ausserrhoden he was already active as a journalist for his radical democratic ideals, especially against the pastorate and for a revision of the cantonal constitution . From 1831 to 1832 he was an actuary of the Ausserrhoder Landbuchrevisionskommission . In 1834 he was editor and editor of the Free Basel Bidder , the mouthpiece of the radicals. From 1835 to 1853 he was the founder and editor of the Basellandschaftliche Volksblatt . From 1846 to 1749 he published revolutionary writings by German authors. From 1850 to 1851 he was a member of the Constitutional Council in Basel . From 1851 to 1854 and from 1864 to 1866 he was a member of the district administrator . From 1851 to 1854 he was a member of the Muttenz municipal council and, in 1863, secretary of the constitutional council. In 1860 he moved to Basel. From 1864 to 1866 he was a member of the commission of the Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank . The uncompromising fighter was one of the most important contributors to the radical change in Switzerland.
